If SEO has a "hardest part", this is usually it. You can write brilliant content and build a fast, flawless site, and still get out-ranked by a weaker competitor — because they have something you don't: backlinks. Here's what they are, why Google cares so much, and how to build them without walking into a penalty.
What a backlink actually is
A backlink is simply a link from another website to yours. That's it. If a local news site, a supplier, or an industry blog links to your page, that's a backlink. Google treats each one as a kind of vote — a signal that someone else found your site useful or trustworthy enough to point their readers at it. Think of it as the internet's version of word of mouth.
Why they matter so much
Google's whole job is to surface trustworthy, useful pages. Content tells Google what your page is about; backlinks help tell Google whether your page is worth trusting. A page with lots of quality sites vouching for it looks a lot more credible than one nobody links to — so, all else equal, it ranks higher. It's one of the strongest ranking signals there is.
Quality beats quantity — every time
This is the mistake that sinks people. One link from a respected, relevant website is worth more than a thousand from spammy, unrelated ones. A few things separate a good link from a worthless (or harmful) one:
- Relevance — a link from a site in or near your industry counts for far more than a random directory in another language.
- Authority — links from established, trusted sites carry more weight.
- Do-follow vs nofollow — "nofollow" links (like most social media and comment links) tell Google not to pass authority. They're not useless, but they don't move rankings the way do-follow links do.
⚠️ The trap that kills websites
At some point you'll be offered "100 backlinks for £5" or a service promising to rocket you up Google overnight. Don't. These are almost always link farms or private blog networks — Google detects them, and they can get your site penalised or wiped from search entirely, sometimes years later when it's painful and expensive to unpick. If a link deal sounds too easy, it's the exact thing that undoes everything else. We've written about cleaning up toxic backlinks for exactly this reason.
How to build links the safe way
Real, durable authority is earned slowly and cleanly. The methods that actually work:
- Be genuinely useful. The best links are the ones people give you because your content is worth citing. That's why good SEO and good content are the foundation of link building, not a separate task.
- Guest posts on relevant, reputable sites in your industry.
- Digital PR — earning mentions in the press with a genuine story or piece of data.
- Trusted directories — reputable industry and local listings, with consistent business details.
None of it is instant, and that's rather the point — authority you earn honestly is authority Google trusts and won't take away. If you'd rather have someone do it properly, earning links without the risk is the core of our digital PR & link building work. Just remember what we said about SEO timelines: this is a marathon, and it's the runners who keep going who win.
